Traditional Mat Pilates Classes and More!
Before there were Pilates equipment classes Joseph Pilates created a bodyweight workout program focusing on developing the core. These exercises were taken from athletic sports like swimming, boxing, gymnastics and professional dance. An hour class can be done using only your own body weight in resistance to gravity. With no equipment to learn a traditional Mat class is a fantastic way to enjoy Pilates and not break the bank.
What is a Traditional Mat Class?
A traditional, or contemporary Mat class focuses on the exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara over the course of their careers teaching movement, while allowing for advances is sports science and our developing understanding of anatomy and how the human body moves. Mr. Pilates looked to his favorite sports and activities and found exercises that would heal the body from within and then added them to the Pilates repertoire.
From there the exercises were organized to meet a particular goal for a client or a larger class. Mr. Pilates called this his Method.
In traditional classes we stick with the Pilates Method with an understanding that the movements are already athletic in nature, so there is little need to “fuse” current popular exercise trends into a class. We let the Pilates be Pilates and focus on quality of movement, rather than simply being out of breath with sore abs.
We don’t throw out the baby with the bath water, so to speak and the result is a challenging workout that is safe, works for all experience levels and will leave you feeling healthy and in a great mood.

What is GYROKENISIS®
Gyrokenisis® is a form of exercise developed by Juliu Horvath, a professional dancer that needed a system of exercises that would repair injuries sustained throughout his career. Gyrokenisis® offers fluid movements that offer benefits similar to swimming, yoga and dance; yet it is not directly based on these or other specific exercise systems.
The exercises in Gyrokenisis® are designed to move the spine and articulate joints through a comfortable range of motion. The movements are rhythmic and fluid and are based on the body’s natural ability to move forward, backward and side to side. The movements are smoothly integrated and will feel more like dance than traditional yoga or mat pilates.
Benefits include increases in flexibility and relaxation and clients of all ages are able to practice the movements. Like mat pilates Gyrokenisis® is a non-machine bases system so no special equipment is required. Our classes are led by Scott Shields who is certified to teach this unique system of movement.
